Development of Digital Core Processes

As part of a large digitalization program, a regional energy provider and grid operator digitized one of the core end-to-end processes to create a blueprint for the overall transformation. BCG Platinion supported this lighthouse project from the requirements engineering and market exploration stage, through the design of the technical solution and tendering of potential vendors, up to the implementation of a functional MVP.

Project Management Support of Strategic Transformation Program

The transformation program of a large energy utility in the Middle East faced major challenges du to a difficult regulatory environment, lack of funding and digital talent. BCG Platinion conducted a review of the IT strategy and implementation planning for key IT initiatives to support the Program Management Office. The reprioritization of initiatives and refinement of the program governance led to an overall turn-around and a successful completion.

Definition of Target IT Architecture

The strategic re-orientation of a large energy commodity trader led to the need of new capabilities the current IT landscape could not provide. BCG Platinion defined a detailed capability model for the client covering all future business needs. On this basis an IT reference architecture was derived and a tendering process to select suitable vendors initiated. A detailed roadmap was developed serving as a guide

Launch Management SAP S/4HANA

Client is a European electric utility company operating in many countries and serving over 20 million customers. The company’s ERP solution has reached ending of maintenance. Additionally, a recent merger has created a demand for the group-wide integration of systems and processes. Target architecture definition

Supported a Swiss bank to build a digital native challenger bank, focused on sustainable investments. BCG Platinion defined the bank’s target solution architecture, created a longlist for major components and ramped-up potential software partners, as well as conducted technical feasibility checks for function building blocks (e.g., robo advisor).

Technology due diligence

Performed a due diligence of an independent wealth manager including an assessment of the Salesforce UX and overall IT architecture within two weeks. The final management summary included general recommendations, an overview of identified red flags, and recommended risk mitigation measures that are required prior a potential takeover.

On-prem Hadoop platform design

Developed a target design for the Hadoop platform for a central European bank to increase data quality and standardization across its various data source systems. The target design was determined across three modules: 1. Technology (e.g., essential platform components), 2. Process (e.g., for data security and access), 3. User (e.g., manual for future users).

Digital Challenger Bank sandbox build

Implemented an internal sandbox environment and selected use cases to showcase the art of the possible for digital native banks. The sandbox is based on capabilities from best-in-class third party providers such as Thought Machine (Core Banking System), or Experian (Credit score calculation) and includes a state-of-the-art iOS frontend.

BCG Platinion re-imagined an end-to-end resourcing and onboarding experience for a global mining company by taking a customer centered design approach to increase levels of engagement. MVPs were also deployed that included new technologies to automate the selection process for 500,000 applicants each year and reducing the time it takes to fill a vacancy by half.

IT cost reduction

For a client in engineered products and infrastructure, BCG Platinion defined how to reduce 20% of the IT-costs in an 18 month period with a worldwide team of IT and organizational experts, who understood where to find hidden cost drivers and how to turn the organization into a world class IT function.

Target State Architecture

A German industrial goods company, with over €40b in revenues, had a complex HR operating model with non-compliant HR applications. BCG Platinion supported the client to help define a new HR IT target landscape and launch regulatory initiatives for HR and payroll, which was successfully harmonized across India, the Middle East and North African regions.

ERP implementation

IT Target Operating Model

BCG Platinion was asked by a global insurer to design their IT target operating model. Based on the client’s ambition to further drive business product and process standardization, we designed a new IT operating model and supported with the transformation. Key aspects were a comprehensive reorganization and the professionalization of major IT delivery capabilities.

Agile@Scale

BCG Platinion transformed the entire IT function of a German Insurer towards agile way of working and integrated it into a scaled agile organization. For 1000+ employees we supported the design of an agile (IT) operating model and enabled the transformation until successful go-live.

IT Architectural Transformation

A major life insurer came to BCG Platinion to transform its global IT architecture and guide strategic technology-based decisions. Five technology patterns were adopted across PaaS, event messaging, intelligent guided capture, real-time analytic model enablement and micro-entitlements, leading to six Proof of Technology pilots.

Public Sector IT Optimization

BCG Platinion was asked to reduce the operating costs, while maintaining headcount. To optimize IT expenditure, the team analyzed contracts, conducted RFIs and reviewed volume, discount, and rate data to develop a framework for major suppliers. This was coupled with a roadmap incorporating new cost-efficient technologies in cloud, outsourcing and remote access.

Public Sector Agency Migration

A public body responsible for managing grants was planning to double its headcount of 750 staff and increase investment to £29bn over three years. Except it had an aging IT architecture and on-premise applications. BCG Platinion designed a high-level strategy and a detailed implementation plan to engage vendors and begin the transformation.

Federal Digital Transformation

As part of a congressional mandate to consolidate systems, a Federal agency engaged BCG Platinion to consolidate systems and analyze its current data landscape to pinpoint new data sources and understand proxy end-to-end data flows. The assessment successfully accelerated the agency’s digital transformation by providing architecture insight to guide modernization and migration.

UK Public Sector Transformation

After launching a multi-year business strategy, a public body engaged BCG Platinion to implement a more Agile operating model. The program modernized the way data was managed across the organization and increased productivity by introducing collaborative processes. The team also produced a three-year roadmap, in compliance with UK government standards for digital transformations.

Activating an Agile Way Of Working

A multinational media firm was facing market pressure to improve IT functionality and drive innovation. Without the skill set to act lean and fast, competitors were outpacing them. BCG Platinion deployed a team of Agile experts to transform client DevOps. and established an Agile Management Office (AMO) to begin replacing traditional waterfall methods with an Agile operating model and restructure teams to align with business functions. As a result, an Agile way of working improved team productivity by up to 30%.

Voice-controlled Augmented Reality Application

In need of maintaining a large portfolio of hardware devices, a client’s field-technicians were only trained on a handful of machines. In an agile working mode, BCG Platinion developed a prototype to demonstrate the potential of AR for use in providing repair support for laptops. In addition to basic AR features, the solution was operable via voice control and offered features like call-an-expert. As a result, untrained technicians, equipped with the prototype, were able to complete repairs as fast as skilled experts.

Define and Execute the Digital Strategy

A global tech company was struggling with accelerating their digital transformation. The lack of a comprehensive vision, digital talent and an efficient execution model delayed the shift towards its new digital-driven business model. In a joint effort across Digital BCG, BCG Platinion established an agile execution model and guided the client in following agile ways of working (WoW). BCG Platinion’s Design & Engineering team kick-started several Lighthouse projects in building digital use cases.

Reimagining the Customer Value Proposition

For a major Middle Eastern telco, BCG Platinion led a 12 week pilot to transform the customer journey and build a digital self-service channel. Powered by AI, the platform was designed and implemented to automate delivery between journey development and IT teams. It led to new ways of working for multi-disciplinary teams and, with customer centricity at its core, increased collaboration and speed to value.
